LiDAR Survey in Greater Noida — Surveying India

Greater Noida’s authority has been bulldozing colonies on the Hindon floodplain, in places where colonisers were trying to start new colonies in what officials call the submerged area. At the same time, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) is allotting large industrial plots, with its latest scheme open from 11 April to 12 May 2026.

One group of buyers needs to know whether land sits too low. Another needs to know exactly how much earth a plot will move. Both questions come down to ground levels. This page explains what a LiDAR survey in Greater Noida delivers, how it compares with drone photogrammetry, and where it helps most.

Why Greater Noida’s Hindon Floodplain Needs Elevation Data

GNIDA has repeatedly removed illegal construction along the Hindon. In one PTI-reported drive, its Projects Department cleared about five hectares in Tugalpur village, in the submerged area, where colonisers were trying to set up a new colony. In another, the authority removed encroachment from 2.5 hectares near Bisrakh in Greater Noida (West), where illegal colonies had come up.

The pressure extends across the Authority boundary. Next door, the Noida Authority reclaimed more than 150 acres of Hindon floodplain at Sorkha village, land valued at roughly ₹4.8 billion, and identified over 200 unauthorised structures. Its CEO advised the public not to buy land in such areas without verifying its legal status, because unauthorised transactions often lead to losses.

Verification of that kind needs two things: the official boundary and the real ground level. LiDAR supplies the second. It measures how high a plot sits compared with the riverbed and embankments, so you can compare it with the notified floodplain line instead of guessing.

LiDAR does not replace that official boundary. It measures what exists on the ground so you can check it against the boundary.

When Boundaries Are Disputed: Measured Data Helps Both Sides

Boundary arguments are common around villages and old settlement land. During Noida’s 2021 drone-based property survey, the Hindustan Times noted that what farmers call a habitation area, the authority calls encroachment.

Disagreements like this stall projects for years. A LiDAR survey gives everyone the same measured facts: building footprints, wall lines, ground levels, and heights. It does not settle the legal question, because that depends on official records. However, it removes arguments about what is physically there.

Other civic bodies already work this way. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation chose LiDAR for a property survey, combining a mobile van survey with drones to detect structural changes in properties for tax purposes. The same approach suits large estates, townships, and village boundaries in Greater Noida.

Industrial Plots and Large Sites: Volumes, Levels, and As-Built Checks

GNIDA invited applications for industrial plots between 11 April and 12 May 2026. Large plots like these need heavy site preparation, and LiDAR helps at each stage.

  • Before work starts: a topographic baseline shows existing levels, drainage lines, and low spots.
  • During earthwork: repeat surveys measure cut-and-fill volumes and stockpiles, so quantities match the design and the bill.
  • After construction: an as-built survey records final levels, building footprints, and heights.

On a large plot, even a small error in average level multiplies across thousands of square metres. A single LiDAR dataset captures the whole site, which makes volume figures far easier to defend.

LiDAR or Drone Photogrammetry? How to Choose

Greater Noida already uses camera drones widely, and for open, well-lit sites they work well. Our aerial drone surveying services and our UAV drone survey service for Delhi NCR cover that work. Photogrammetry builds a surface model from overlapping photographs.

LiDAR earns its place where photographs fall short:

  • Vegetation: laser pulses reach the ground through crops, kans grass, and scrub, which matters on a riverbed.
  • Low light: LiDAR does not depend on sunlight.
  • Heights and levels: it measures embankment crests, fill, and structure heights directly.

In practice, the choice depends on the question. If you only need a visual map of an open plot, drone photogrammetry may be enough. If ground level under vegetation matters, choose LiDAR, and many projects combine both. We explain this trade-off in detail for dense-vegetation cities in the North East, with separate comparisons for Agartala, Imphal, and Nagaland.

Aerial vs Terrestrial LiDAR: Which Does Your Greater Noida Project Need?

Aerial LiDAR, flown by drone, suits riverbeds, floodplain edges, large plots, and corridor surveys. It covers wide areas quickly.

Terrestrial and mobile LiDAR suits individual buildings, basements, and built-up sectors where fine detail matters more than coverage. It records facades, boundary walls, and building footprints at high point density.

Many projects need both. A plot near the Hindon, for example, may need aerial capture of the surrounding land and a terrestrial scan of an existing structure.

How a LiDAR Survey Works

  1. Project briefing and scope definition — We confirm the area, required point density, and deliverable format, and we flag early whether floodplain, boundary, or volume checks are part of the goal.
  2. Flight or ground planning — For aerial work, we plan flight lines over the plot, riverbed, or corridor; for terrestrial work, we plan scan positions that cover built-up areas without gaps.
  3. Data capture — Our in-house equipment records dense point cloud data across the survey area.
  4. Point cloud processing and classification — We classify the data into ground, vegetation, water, and structures, and produce a bare-earth elevation model. For repeat surveys, we also calculate volumes and run change detection between dates.
  5. Deliverable generation — You receive elevation models, contour and topographic maps, volume reports, change maps, or BIM-ready point clouds in your required format.

Applications of LiDAR Survey in Greater Noida

  • Hindon floodplain checks for plots near the river, supporting due diligence before purchase
  • Boundary and footprint mapping for villages, estates, and disputed edges
  • Volume and earthwork surveys for industrial plots, townships, and stockpiles
  • Topographic and contour surveys for large plots across Knowledge Park, Kasna, Surajpur, Greater Noida West, and the Yamuna Expressway belt
  • Corridor mapping for road, Metro, and utility alignments
  • As-built documentation for towers and plants, feeding into our Scan to BIM services in Delhi NCR, BIM survey services in Gurgaon, and BIM survey services across India
  • Construction progress monitoring across multi-phase developments

Choosing the Right Point Density

Point density, measured in points per square metre, should match your question. A broad floodplain or plot-level survey can use a lower density, since the goal is overall terrain shape and volumes. A facade or structure scan needs a much higher density to capture edges and fine detail.

Scoping this correctly at the briefing stage avoids two common problems. You do not pay for more density than you need, and you do not discover later that the data is too sparse for its purpose.

How Long Does a LiDAR Survey Take?

A terrestrial scan of a single building or small plot typically wraps up data capture within a day, and processed deliverables follow within about a week to ten days. A larger aerial survey takes longer for both planning and processing, often two to four weeks depending on area and density.

Weather and access also affect scheduling. Monsoon conditions and standing water can limit flying and field work, so we plan realistic windows with you from the start.

Why an In-House Team Matters

Greater Noida projects often combine open terrain, river edges, and built structures in one engagement, which is hard to manage across several vendors. Because our team handles aerial and terrestrial LiDAR in-house, from flight planning through classification and deliverables, you get one point of contact for the whole scope. Our head office is in Gurugram, in the same NCR region, and we work across Noida, Greater Noida, and the Yamuna Expressway belt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Hindon floodplain matter for buyers in Greater Noida?

GNIDA and the Noida Authority have demolished illegal colonies and constructions on Hindon floodplain land, including in Tugalpur, Bisrakh, and Sorkha. Officials have advised the public to verify the legal status of land before buying near the river.

Does LiDAR replace the official floodplain boundary?

No. The notified boundary remains the legal reference. LiDAR measures ground levels and structures, so you can compare what exists on the ground with that boundary.

Can LiDAR help with disputed village or estate boundaries?

It gives everyone the same measured facts, including building footprints, wall lines, ground levels, and heights. Legal boundaries still depend on official records, but measured data removes disagreement about what is physically there.

How does LiDAR help with large industrial plots?

A single survey captures the whole site. Repeat surveys measure cut-and-fill volumes and stockpiles during earthwork, and an as-built survey records final levels and footprints afterwards.

What is the difference between LiDAR and drone photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry builds a surface model from overlapping photographs and works well on open, well-lit sites. LiDAR uses laser pulses that reach the ground through vegetation, work in low light, and measure heights directly. Many projects combine both.

Do you handle permits for aerial LiDAR or drone survey work in Greater Noida?

Yes, permit applications and flight clearances are managed as part of the engagement for any aerial or drone-based LiDAR survey work.
